Map of Barrydale Heritage Walk

1. The First Church

Built in 1877 from mudbrick, lime, and poplar, the first church was a community-built spiritual center. The nearby parsonage, now Môreson House, marks the beginning of town life. Ox wagons once passed here en route to Die Langhuis Trading Store.

2. Tradouw Pass

Completed in 1873 by Thomas Bain, the pass connected Barrydale to key trade routes. Its mountain water enabled early settlements, and its engineering remains a marvel of the era.

3. Van Riebeeck Street & Die Langhuis

This was the heart of early Barrydale life. Die Langhuis (1865) is one of the oldest structures, now a B&B and restaurant, reputed to be haunted. Van Riebeeck Street ties together water, faith, and roads—Barrydale’s foundational elements.

4. The Galleons

A merged structure of two original Brakdak homes with nautical plaques from a Royal Navy officer. Once the post office, this 1800s structure is a rare link to a vibrant trading past.

5. Karoo Art Hotel

Originally built in 1888, this iconic hotel has worn many names and stories—including ghost tales—before becoming the Karoo Art Hotel. Today, it features themed rooms, a vintage bar, and creative spaces.

6. Dutch Reformed Church (NGK)

Completed in 1911, this architectural landmark features a clock tower and stained-glass windows. The adjacent 1897 parsonage and Norman & Beard organ reflect a rich religious legacy.

7. Van Coller House and Barn

Likely Barrydale’s oldest structure, gifted in 1892. Together with the church, it reflects the town’s roots in faith and farming. Nearby, a mudbrick wall served as a Boer War defense line in 1900.

8. Kelly’s Corner

This restored Nagmaal cottage across from the school was awarded by the Swellendam Heritage Association. It embodies responsible restoration and community spirit.

9. First School

Built in 1885 and operational until 1918. Now part of Net Vir Pret, this historic building continues to serve the youth of Barrydale.

10. Nagmaalhuis (Greeman Cottage)

A humble mud-floored cottage on Route 62 used for seasonal church visits. Once home to a wagon-maker’s family of nine, it is a rare glimpse into 19th-century farm life.

11. Boer Hero Gideon Scheepers

Legend has it that Scheepers visited Barrydale to recruit fighters before his 1902 capture. A rare photo exists showing him in front of the Karoo Art Hotel with locals. He remains a folk hero for his daring raids.

12. Anglican Church

This mid-20th century church is home to an original slave bell and continues to serve the community under the Diocese of George. Its presence links colonial history to modern Barrydale.
